Most famous celebrity comebacks (20 images)

If there's anything the public loves, it's a successful comeback, and the more scandalous the nadir, the most spectacular the ascent. Hollywood lends itself to such stories of drug-laden lows and redemptive highs, and these celebs are no different, falling on and off of the wagon at various times of their lives.

Actor Robert Downey Jr. tried marijuana for the first time when he was 6-years old and it seemed to go downhill from there. Throughout his late teens and early twenties he developed serious addictions to cocaine, heroine and other drugs. Downey Jr. was arrested several times, and attended several rehab clinics, and even prison.

Downey's career as an actor subsequently suffered. It wasn't until 2002, after he was last released from rehab, that he finally cleaned up his act and magically turned into the man he is today: a renowned, Oscar-nominated actor. UPI/Jim Ruymen

Charlie Sheen has had an on-and-off relationship with drug-addiction. It all started when Sheen was 11-years-old and started experimenting with drugs. He eventually became addicted to cocaine, and reportedly drank two quarts of vodka a day. In 1998, the actor overdosed on cocaine in his Malibu home . At this time, his father, actor Martin Sheen stepped in and reported him to a judge who demanded Charlie went to rehab.

The intervention seemed to work like a charm, as Sheen stayed a away from drugs for the next 10 years. He then became the father of four children with former wives Denise Richard and Brooke Muller, and one of the highest-paid actors in television. But in 2009 Sheen's troubles went full circle when he was arrested for assaulting then-wife Miller, and was once again sent to rehab and put on a 30-day probation.

From that moment on a series of increasingly bizarre events (and increasingly covered by the media) took over Sheen's life, costing him his role in sitcom "Two-And-Half Man" and his sober-reputation. It remains to be seen whether Sheen can conjure a second comeback. UPI/Jonathan Alcorn

Before becoming one of Charlie's Angels, Drew Barrymore was a wild child. At the age of 9, Barrymore already was smoking cigarettes, at 11 she drank enough to be considered an alcoholic, at 12 she was a regularly smoked marijuana, at 13 she was a cocaine addict and at 14 she attempted suicide.

After two unsuccessful stints in rehab, Barrymore suddenly turned her life around. She's now turned her childhood stardom into adult success as an actress and producer. UPI/Rune Hellestad
