NHL: New Jersey 5, Carolina 0

RALEIGH, N.C., March 31 (UPI) -- Ilya Kovalchuk notched a goal and two assists Saturday and New Jersey clinched a post-season berth with a 5-0 whitewash of Carolina.

Petr Sykora contributed a goal and an assist, while David Clarkson, Ryan Carter and Zach Parise also scored for the Devils, who reached the playoffs for the 14th time in 15 seasons.

Martin Brodeur earned his third shutout this season with 22 saves as the Devils strengthened their hold on the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference with 96 points.

Brian Boucher made 26 saves for the Hurricanes.
