Millions affected in Indonesia blackout

JAKARTA, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- More than 100 million people in Indonesia were believed affected by a power outage caused by technical problems at a series of power stations Thursday.

Homes and businesses were left in the dark in at least three provinces, including the capital Jakarta, and transport services were disrupted.

Thousands of police were mobilized in Jakarta, which was reported "completely blacked out."

Officials said the provinces of West Java and Banten also were affected, as were parts of the resort island of Bali.

More than 120 million people live in the affected region.

Officials said they were trying to isolate the cause of the problem. But they emphasized that the outage had nothing to do with recent power shortages caused by high oil prices.
