MALIBU, Calif., Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Troubled actor Michael Madsen has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman said.

Madsen's attorney, Perry Wander, told TMZ the 57-year-old "Reservoir Dogs" and "Kill Bill" star believes the breathalyzer test was flawed and insists the episode is a misunderstanding.

But sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said Madsen, 54, was arrested because police smelled alcohol in his car after pulling him over for driving erratically in Malibu Wednesday afternoon.

Madsen was arrested on suspicion of DUI after he blew a .20 on a Breathalyzer test, TMZ reported.

The legal limit is .08.

Madsen's career has been eclipsed in recent years by reports of substance abuse, brushes with the law and erratic behavior. He was arrested in March on child-endangerment charges after allegedly getting into a fight with his son, whom he said he caught smoking marijuana in their home.

Complaints were also made against him after he was involved in a disturbance in a London hotel room in 2008. A few months later, he was hospitalized in California on a psychiatric hold after a family member called police due to his alleged erratic behavior.
