NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- Trumpeter Irvin Mayfield has been named cultural ambassador representing the City of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana by New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin.
As cultural ambassador, Mayfield will speak to dignitaries, elected officials, businessmen and the citizens of foreign cities about potential cultural and artistic collaborations that can help grow new business. Mayfield is scheduled to perform for King Rama IX, Bhumibol Adulyadej Maharaja of Thailand in December, as well as for President Vicente Fox of Mexico next fall.
"Irvin Mayfield has worked tirelessly to spread the sounds of New Orleans nationally and internationally," said Mayor Nagin. "As a cultural ambassador, we will bring the spirit of New Orleans with him during his travels and spread the word that New Orleans is a center of creativity and diversity."
"Irvin Mayfield is already an international superstar," said Dan Packer, chairman of the New Orleans Aviation Board. "This appointment grants him the diplomatic authority to meet with leaders around the world and promote both our world-class city and our international airport."
