NEW YORK, July 19 (UPI) -- Madonna demanded air conditioning be cut at New York's Madison Square Garden to save her vocal cords, but while the temperature rose, the crowd kept cool.
It was one of the hottest days of this year, and the sold-out venue was 85 degrees when Madonna came onstage. By the time the concert was over, it was 90, said a Daily News reporter who was carrying a thermometer.
"It's suffocating," said Stephanie Krukovsky, 22, of Toms River, N.J.
Diehard fans who already knew about the pop star's proclivities were armed with hand-held electric fans.
"It's really, really bad," said Olga Byrne, 64. "It's so hot, but it's worth it."
