BEIRUT, Lebanon, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- The speaker of the Lebanese Parliament called on U.S. President Barack Obama to support democratic developments in a country strained by the Syrian war.
Obama secured a second term in office during Tuesday's election.
Lebanese leaders issued a statement to the U.S. president congratulating him on his victory. Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said he hoped Obama would work toward peace in the region during his next term.
"We in Lebanon are looking forward to continued U.S. support to Lebanon's stability and to strengthen democracy in it," he was quoted by The Daily Star newspaper in Lebanon as saying.
U.S. leaders have spoken with Lebanese officials following the assassination of a top intelligence chief there last month.
Lebanon, once influenced heavily by the Syrian government, has felt the strain from the country's civil war. Opposition leaders have boycotted a government in Beirut led by a coalition that includes members of Hezbollah, saying Syria played a role in last month's bombing.
