LOS ANGELES, July 26 (UPI) -- Actress Kiersey Clemons has been cast as Iris West in Warner Bros. upcoming superhero epic, The Flash.

According to Variety, Clemons was the top choice at the studio for the female lead in the film. The actress has experience working with new director Rick Famuyiwa as the pair collaborated together in 2015 on Dope.

Iris West, a noted DC Comics character, is a journalist and friend of Barry Allen aka The Flash (Ezra Miller) who eventually falls for The Scarlet Speedster. Currently, Iris West is portrayed by Candice Patton on the CW's Flash series that is unrelated to Warner Bros. currently ongoing DC cinematic universe.

The film, still without an official release date, was originally set to be helmed by first-time director Seth Grahme-Smith who left the project in April due to creative differences. The script for The Flash is based off of a treatment by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

Miller as The Flash was formally introduced to fans Saturday as he appeared in the first trailer for Justice League, released during the San Diego Comic-Con.
