Kid Rock hints at possible run for Senate in 2018

July 12 (UPI) -- Kid Rock hinted at a possible 2018 run for Senate in Michigan in a tweet Wednesday.

"I have had a ton of emails and texts asking me if this website is real... kidrockforsenate.com The answer is an absolute YES," he tweeted, adding: "Stay tuned, I will have a major announcement in the near future."

Judith Ingram, a spokeswoman for the FEC, told CNN that the FEC does not currently have a filing for Kid Rock or his official name, Robert Ritchie. But she added that Senate applications "would first go to the Secretary of the Senate, which is the entry point for Senate filings."

The website Kid Rock tweeted only has a homepage with a photo of him in a leather jacket sitting in a senatorial-like office and sitting next to a stuffed deer. Underneath is a link to buy t-shirts and a number of stickers along with a graphic of alternating slogans, including, "I'll rock the party," "You've never met a politician quite like me" and "Pimp of the nation."

Kid Rock, a self-declared conservative who endorsed Donald Trump in 2016 and Mitt Romney in 2012, has been been considered by the Michigan GOP to be the party's challenger in 2018 to face-off against incumbent Sen. Debbie Stabenow, Roll Call reported in February.

In an interview with The Guardian in 2015, Kid Rock laid out some of his political views.

"I am definitely a Republican on fiscal issues and the military, but I lean to the middle on social issues," he said. "I am no fan of abortion, but it's not up to a man to tell a woman what to do. As an ordained minister I don't look forward to marrying gay people, but I'm not opposed to it."
