May 31 (UPI) -- John Cena has announced on Twitter that he will be returning to the WWE on Smackdown Live on July 4.

"Bittersweet day today as I begin another night in Atlanta. Such a funny movie but #SDLive @WWE is so close! 7/4 can't get here fast enough!" Cena tweeted Tuesday as Smackdown Live aired from Atlanta where Cena is filming a movie.

The WWE Superstar was last seen in early April as part of WrestleMania 33 where he made headlines for proposing to his longtime girlfriend Nikki Bella after the pair defeated fellow WWE couple The Miz and his wife Maryse.

"I forgot how to breathe and I got really nervous," Bella said previously of the special moment. "And then I said yes!"

It remains unclear if Bella is also set to return to action on Smackdown Live along with Cena as the Total Divas star also took time off following WrestleMania.

Cena will be returning to Smackdown as the company's blue-brand now features newly crowned WWE Champion Jinder Mahal. Perhaps Cena will challenge The Maharaja for his title at the July 23 event Battleground or in August during SummerSlam.
