Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki retiring from filmmaking

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki says the current release "The Wind Rises" will be his last feature movie.

Koju Hoshino, president of Miyazaki's production company Studio Ghibli, announced the 72-year-old auteur's retirement Sunday at the Venice Film Festival, the Los Angeles Times said.

Hoshino said more details regarding the surprise announcement would be released next week at a news conference in Tokyo.

Miyazaki's films include "Princess Mononoke," "Howl's Moving Castle," "Ponyo" and "Spirited Away."
