Ill. House approves gambling bill

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., May 30 (UPI) -- The Illinois House approved a major gambling bill Monday.

The measure, passed 65-50 with two members voting present, would allow a casino in Chicago, four more casinos throughout the state, a riverboat gambling venue on Lake Michigan, and slot machines at racetracks and Chicago's two airports, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The legislation has yet to be acted on by the Senate.

Proponents project the gambling expansion could produce $1.4 billion in one-time fees plus $500 million a year in tax revenue.

The jackpot would be spent on education, public works projects and local governments.
