MEMPHIS, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Freshman lineman Matthew Bentley intercepted a pass inside his own five-yard line with four seconds remaining Saturday to preserve Houston's 26-21 Conference USA victory over struggling Memphis.
Nick Eddy passed for 210 yards and two touchdowns and Joffrey Reynolds ran for 122 yards and a score for Houston (4-5, 2-4 C-USA), which has won two league games in a row after losing 14 straight.
Memphis (2-7, 1-5) erased an early 13-point deficit and took a 14-13 halftime lead as Danny Wimprine threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Tripp Higgins and Dante Brown scored on a two-yard run.
But tight end Matt Mattox recovered a fumble in the end zone to cap a 98-yard drive and put Houston in front to stay, 19-14, with just over five minutes to go in the third quarter.
Eddy connected with Stephen Cucci on a 48-yard scoring strike in the final minute of the period to make it 26-14.
The Tigers, who have lost five in a row, got within 26-21 midway through the fourth quarter on a 10-yard toss from Wimprine to Tavares Gideon. Wimprine completed 24 of 44 passes for 342 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
