June 7 (UPI) -- Google is celebrating what would have been the 109th birthday of Apgar score inventor Dr. Virginia Apgar with a new Doodle. The Apgar score is the first standardized method for measuring a newborn baby's health. It looks at 5 factors that begin with each letter of Apgar's name such as appearance, pulse, grimace, activity and respiration.

Dr. Apgar, born in 1909, came up with the system in 1952 and it has been used in nearly every hospital since.
Dr. Apgar was also the first woman to become a full professor at her alma mater, the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and served as director of the school's department of anesthesiology. She would leave the school in the 1950s and go on to serve as director at the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, now known as March of Dimes.
Google's homepage features animated artwork depicting Dr. Apgar taking notes on a clipboard while studying a number of newborns.
"Today, on what would've been her 109th birthday, we celebrate a woman whose incredible life's work continues to touch -- and sometimes save -- brand new lives every day," Google said.
