ATLANTA, July 23 (UPI) -- Frozen yellowfin tuna sold to restaurants and grocery stores for sushi has been recalled after being linked to 62 cases of Salmonella in 11 states since March.
The Minnesota State Department of Health linked Osamu Corporation to the Salmonella-tainted tuna after two people were made sick by tuna in spica tuna rolls purchased at a grocery store and a workplace cafeteria, officials said in a press release on July 14.
The illness caused by Salmonella bacteria usually includes diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps within 12 to 72 hours after exposure. The strain that has been blamed for this outbreak, however, does not cause paratyphoid fever, enteric fever or typhoid fever.
So far, 62 confirmed cases of illness caused by the Salmonella Paratyphi B variant in 11 states, including 34 in California, 11 in Arizona, 6 in New Mexico and 4 in Minnesota. Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin each had 1 confirmed illness from caused by the Salmonella strain, according to a press release from the Centers for Disease Control.
Osamu Corporation has issued two recalls for its frozen raw tuna, the first of which was on July 20 for all the frozen tuna it distributed in the U.S. between May 9 and July 9 that came from one of its processing plants in Indonesia after the Minnesota State Department of Health found samples that tested positive for Salmonella.
The company issued the second recall on July 21 for packages from a specific lot of frozen yellowfin tuna chunk meat sold to a company in Rancho Dominquez, Calif., that tested positive.
The CDC said in the release that the recalled packages of tuna can be identified by four-digit purchase order numbers 8563 through 8599 located on each product carton box, and the chunk meat identified by lot number 68568.
