DALLAS, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- A family member told WFAA on Monday that 26-year-old Nina Pham is the Dallas nurse who contracted the Ebola virus while caring for Liberian Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan.
Pham, a critical care nurse at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, is the first person known to have contracted the virus on U.S. soil. She is now in isolation and in stable condition.
Jennifer Joseph, Pham's friend and former coworker, told The New York Times that Pham was "resting."
"She's hopeful and just resting," Joseph said. "Not letting the media and all this overwhelm her. She's just having some time to herself, to be able to read and relax."
Centers for Disease Control Director Dr. Tom Frieden said Sunday that Pham contracted the virus during an unspecified "breach of protocol" at the hospital.
He added Monday that the agency needed to "rethink" the agency's containment strategy in light of Pham's infection with the deadly virus.
"Even a single infection is unacceptable," Frieden said.
Pham drove herself to the hospital on Friday night experiencing what was described as a low-grade fever.
Dr. Kent Bradley, the American doctor who survived the Ebola virus, drove to Dallas on Sunday to donate his blood for Pham's treatment.
