Student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has meningitis

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif., Dec. 13 (UPI) -- A student at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, was diagnosed with viral meningitis, but campus officials say it is an isolated case.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo officials said university medical staff see no evidence of a significant risk of exposure to the broader campus community from the ill student, who is an off-campus resident and is receiving medical care.

Cal Poly Health Center staff informed other students who had been in contact with the infected student and advised them on signs and symptoms that would necessitate medical attention.

There are two main types of meningitis -- viral and bacterial. Viral meningitis is serious, but not usually as serious as bacterial meningitis. People usually recover from viral meningitis within one to two weeks without any long-term problems, university officials said.

Thursday's announcement from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo was preceded by an announcement that an adviser at University of California, Riverside, had meningitis and while officials at University of California, Santa Barbara, confirmed their fourth case of meningitis in about a month, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Three of the four students at UC Santa Barbara are expected to fully recover, but one student had to have his feet amputated.

In New Jersey, Princeton University officials said eight students have been diagnosed with bacterial meningitis since last March.
