J.D. Payne, Patrick McKay tapped to write 'Star Trek' film

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- U.S. screenwriters J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will co-write the third installment of the "Star Trek" franchise reboot, the Hollywood Reporter said.

The duo will co-write with Roberto Orci, who, along with Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof, wrote the first two installments, the magazine reported.

Kurtzman will not be involved with the third film.

The third film doesn't have a title or a release date, but Paramount and Skydance Productions were hoping its release would coincide with the 50th anniversary of the franchise in 2016, the Reporter said.

The film doesn't have a director, though Joe Cornish, director of "Attack the Block," is reported under consideration.

J.J. Abrams, who directed the first two films of the "Star Trek" reboot, is unable to helm the third film because he'll be directing "Star Wars: Episode VII," the Reporter said.

Actors Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana are expected to return for the latest film.
