Ten people who came into contact with the cat have been vaccinated for the disease as a precaution, France's Ministry of Agriculture.

France was declared rabies-free in 2002 but that status was suspended for two years when a rabies-infected dog was brought to the country from Morocco and infected other dogs.

There have been no human cases of rabies in mainland France since 1923.
