Illness tracked to Toronto's Cronut Burger's maple bacon jam

TORONTO, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Toronto officials allowed a vendor to reopen at the Canadian National Exhibition after tracing the 223 cases of food poisoning to the cronut's maple bacon jam.

Last week, many people visiting the CNE tweeted how much they liked the latest version of the cronut burger -- The Bacon Jam Cronut Burger a cheeseburger, optional egg or bacon, and maple bacon jam added to the half-doughnut, half-croissant bun -- and many of them later tweeted that they had stomach illness and diarrhea, the CBC reported.

The Cronut -- layers of puff pastry made into a doughnut shape and fried -- was created by a New York City bakery and after it became a hit, other versions of the cronut became an international delicacy.

Toronto health officials said the part of The Bacon Jam Cronut Burger, contaminated with the Staphylococcus aureus toxin was the maple bacon jam topping.

"New lab results indicate that the maple bacon jam, which is one component of the cronut burger, is the cause of foodborne illnesses at the CNE," Dr. David McKeown, Toronto's medical officer, told the CBC. "We have ensured the contaminated product is not served. There is no risk to the public."

Epic Burgers and Waffles could reopen its food stall at the CNE because the contaminated topping was from an outside vendor, Le Dolci, public health officials said.

However, Epic Burgers and Waffles said in a statement on its website it would reopen its food stand at the CNE but no longer serve The Bacon Jam Cronut Burger.

"As a result of this finding, Epic Burgers and Waffles have decided to remove the Cronut Burger from our menu and we will no longer do business with the aforementioned supplier," the statement said.
