H7N9 bird flu strain spreading in China

BEIJING, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- The H7N9 strain of avian influenza has spread to Guangdon province in southern China, health officials say.

The provincial Department of Health said initial tests Tuesday showed a 51-year-old woman has the virus, China's official Xinhua News Agency reported Friday.

The first human cases of H7N9 were reported in China in March. Since then, the virus has been found in 130 people and 43 have died.

The woman in Guangdong said she had been in contact with live poultry. While most cases in China appear to have spread from birds, one case of human-to-human transmission was reported this week.
