China records 38th H7N9 bird flu death

SHANGHAI, June 1 (UPI) -- The outbreak of H7N9 bird flu has left a total of 38 people dead in China, officials said.

The latest fatality was a 59-year-old man in Shanghai who died Friday afternoon, China's Xinhua News Agency reported. He had been sick with the virus for nearly two months, the Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission said in a statement.

Chinese authorities have reported a total of 131 confirmed H7N9 cases on China's mainland.
