Daily senior exercise with DVD beneficial

URBANA, Ill., April 9 (UPI) -- A daily exercise program using a safe and sensible exercise DVD improves a senior's balance, flexibility and strength, a U.S. researcher says.

Edward McAuley of the University of Illinois tested a DVD that focused on flexibility, toning and balance.

The researcher team found most of the 307 seniors stayed with the program over the six-month period of the study, and did about as much work as the program required.

Physical tests showed the seniors ended up in better shape, McAuley said.

"For older adults, coupling aerobic activity like brisk walking with activities that improve flexibility, strength and balance, are likely to reap the greatest physical and mental health benefits," McAuley said in a statement.

The study was published in the Journals of Gerontology Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences.
