About 90,000 children injured by falls/yr.

COLUMBUS, Ohio, May 21 (UPI) -- Nearly 90,000 U.S. children age 5 and less were injured in 2008, the latest year for which there is data, researchers said.

Dr. Gary Smith of Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, said many of the falls and injuries could be prevented by installing gates at the top and bottom of stairs.

"An important finding in the study was that, among children younger than 1 year of age, about a quarter of the time, they were injured while being carried by a caretaker," Smith said in a statement.

The study was published in the journal Pediatrics.
