To lose beer belly, first quit beer

DALLAS, April 30 (UPI) -- A U.S. sports medicine doctor says people who want to lose a beer belly before summer arrives should first stop drinking beer.

Dr. Robert Dimeff, who directs primary care sports medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, said those wanting to lose belly fat to look more attractive or to be healthier should start with the obvious approached.

"To lose a beer belly you have to stop drinking beer, eat less food and exercise more," Dimeff said in a statement. "It's where most men store their fat, especially as they age."

Abdominal- and back-targeting exercises such as trunk rotations and roman curls using kettlebells or medicine balls are effective, Dimeff advised.

"The right balance of trunk exercise is important," Dimeff said. "Most of the abdominal muscles start in the back and wrap around to the front, and so you have to do a variety of strengthening exercises."
