Snacks: One-third of Thanksgiving calories

FORT WORTH, Texas, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- A representative of a U.S. food-maker advises staying clear of calorie-rich side-dishes and snacks this Thanksgiving.

Tracey Altman, vice president marketing for Wholly Guacamole, says an estimated 30 percent of Thanksgiving calories come from outside the traditional meal.

"For many consumers, this is the start of gaining weight season," Altman says in a statement. "Making better choices in between meals allows them to still enjoy their favorites."

Altman suggests stocking the fridge with foods that work double duty -- acting as both snack and ingredient --but not high in calories. A good, low calorie alternative is fresh cut vegetables served with hummus, guacamole or warm queso.

Another Altman idea for low-calorie snacking is substituting guacamole -- 25 calories -- as a sandwich spread instead of mayonnaise which is 45 calories or 90-calorie ranch dressing.

For turkey leftovers, Altman suggests Southwestern Turkey salad: Combine about a pound of cubed leftover cooked turkey with 1 cup each of:

-- Light sour cream.

-- Guacamole.

-- Rinsed black beans.

-- Diced Red onion.

-- Drained corn kernels.

Stir together. Add salt and pepper to taste and serve with lettuce leaves as a wrap or with pita chips for dipping.
