JACKSON, Miss., Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Cal-Maine Foods Inc. said Monday it was recalling about 24,000 dozen eggs that came from an Ohio supplier.
The Jackson, Miss., company said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration informed it Ohio Fresh Eggs LLC of Croton, Ohio, had a routine environmental study sample that tested positive for Salmonella Enteritidis.
Cal-Maine had purchased the unprocessed eggs from Ohio Fresh and processed and re-packaged them at the company's Green Forest, Ark., facility Oct. 9-12. The FDA notified Cal-Maine of the potential health risk Monday, the company said in a news release posted on its Web site.
The eggs involved were distributed to food wholesalers and retailers in Arkansas, California, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas under the Sunny Meadow, Springfield Grocer, Sun Valley and James Farm brands.
The company said it was working with the FDA to immediately notify its customers and recall the products, which had sell-by dates between Nov. 7-9.
There have been no confirmed salmonella illnesses related to the purchased eggs, Cal-Maine said.
Consumers who believe they may have purchased potentially affected shell eggs should not eat them. They can be returned to the store where they were purchased for a full refund, the company said. Questions also can be directed to Cal-Maine's corporate office at 1-866-276-6299 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CST.
