Fries linked to higher breast cancer risk

LEEDS, England, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Exposure to dietary acrylamide -- found in french fries -- may increase the risk of breast cancer in premenopausal women, researchers in Britain say.

Researchers at the University of Leeds estimated intake of dietary acrylamide intake -- a possible carcinogen found in starchy foods such as potato chips -- in 33,7331 women ages 35-69 from the United Kingdom Women's Cohort Study, who were tracked for 11 years. During the study period, 1,084 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed, foodconsumer.com reported.

The researchers found overall acrylamide intake was not associated with breast cancer risk, but after factoring in other variable, dietary acrylamide was linked with a 20 percent increased risk of breast cancer in premenopausal women -- but not in postmenopausal women.

The findings are published in the British Journal of Cancer.
