Sneaking in whole grains via snacks

MINNEAPOLIS, July 23 (UPI) -- Having children eat snacks containing whole grains -- like graham crackers -- can help them meet the recommended three servings a day, U.S. researchers say.

University of Minnesota researchers say earlier studies have showed children typically only eat about one serving per day.

Researchers served graham snacks with four different levels of whole-grain flour to about 100 elementary-school children in a Roseville, Minn., after-school program.

The study, published in the British Food Journal, found the children ate just as many crackers with higher whole-grain content as the lower whole-grain content versions.

"Graham snacks provide a healthy, highly acceptable whole grain food that kids love to eat," lead investigator Len Marquart says in a statement. "This is an excellent way for kids to get up to an additional serving of whole grain per snacking occasion."
