NEW YORK, July 15 (UPI) -- For the 20th year in a row, Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore is ranked at the top of the U.S. News Media Group's best hospitals rankings.
U.S. News Media's honor roll of the nation's best hospitals for 2010-2011 is an elite group of 14 hospitals that excludes 99.7 percent of all 4,852 hospitals in the nation. All of the Top 14 have very high scores in six or more specialties such as cancer, heart disease or urology.
The 50 highest scorers were ranked, but scores and data for another 1,740 unranked hospitals are also available online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals. The rankings are featured in the August print issue of U.S.News & World Report, available on newsstands July 27.
Death rate, care factors, and patient safety make up about two-thirds of each hospital's score and the reputation part of the score comes from nearly 10,000 physicians, who were surveyed in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and asked to name five hospitals they consider among the best in their specialty for difficult cases, ignoring cost or location.
After Johns Hopkins, the honor roll of top U.S. hospitals includes: the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.; Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston; the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland; the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles; New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell, New York; University of California, San Francisco Medical Center; Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University, St. Louis; Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C.; Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston; University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle; University of Pittsburgh Medical Center; and the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers, Ann Arbor.
