A nice basket, good lighting sells apples

NEW YORK, June 7 (UPI) -- Moving apples out of a stainless steel tray into an attractive basket with good lighting results in kids eating more apples, U.S. researchers found.

Professor Brian Wansink of Cornell University's Smarter Lunchroom Initiative said he found a 58 percent increase in fresh-fruit sales at one New York school simply by moving fruit from a stainless steel tray and into a basket lit by an ordinary desk lamp.

"The best solution is often the simplest one," Wansink said in a statement. "Rather than penalizing a less healthy food choice, we just made the healthier item much more likely to be noticed and chosen."

Wansink presented the findings at the Food for Your Whole Life Health Symposium in New York.
