WASHINGTON, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Packages of Merrick Beef Filet Squares for dogs may be contaminated with salmonella and should not be handled or fed to pets, U.S. health officials said.
The packages, distributed nationwide through retail stores and Internet sales, contained a date that said "Best By 111911," The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said in a release Friday.
The 10-ounce products were in green, red and tan resealable plastic bags.
Evidence of salmonella was found during routine testing of the product last month and subsequent inspections found deficiencies in the packaging and manufacturing process by Merrick Pet Care, FDA officials said.
No illnesses associated with the treats had been reported.
Salmonella in animals and people can produce diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, cramping, fever and vomiting. Other symptoms include lethargy and decreased appetite.
