Begin watching waistline on New Year's Eve

DALLAS, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- The New Year's Eve party is a good place and time to start keeping a New Year's resolution to watch one's weight, a U.S. expert suggests.

Lona Sandon, a registered dietitian at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, says the winter holidays shouldn't be a nightmare for people watching their waistlines.

"Place a super-sized salad bowl filled with fresh leafy greens and colorful veggies at the front of the serving line," Sandon said in a statement. "This will encourage you and your guests to start the meal with a healthful, high fiber, low-calorie appetizer."

Sandon also suggests to:

-- Use broth instead of butter to saute, saving 104 calories per tablespoon of butter.

-- Substitute one-third cup of mayonnaise and one-third cup of non-fat yogurt for two-thirds cup of mayonnaise, saving 480 calories.

-- Use non-fat milk instead of whole milk, saving 60 calories per cup.

-- Use plain non-fat yogurt instead of cream, saving 720 calories per cup.

-- Eat skinless chicken, saving 360 calories per whole bird.
