Man to donate sperm to daughter-in-law

LONDON, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A British man plans to become his grandson’s biological father by donating sperm to his daughter-in-law.

That means any children conceived with the donated sperm will be their father’s biological half-siblings.

The 72-year-old man has been cleared as a donor, The Daily Mail reported. Neither he, nor his son and daughter-in-law have been identified.

Kamal Ahuja, scientific director at the London Women’s Clinic, said that the ethics committee discussed the case at length before allowing the couple to proceed.

Peter Bowen-Simpkins, the clinic’s co-director, said that the couple first tried in vitro fertilization using the husband’s sperm. When that failed, they decided that they wanted a donor who shared some genetic background with the husband, who has no brothers.

The donor’s wife has also consented to the procedure, Bowen-Simpkins said.
