Aelos drug in goverment mustard gas study

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif., May 23 (UPI) -- U.S. firm Aeolus Pharmaceuticals said Wednesday its lead investigational drug will be tested in a government study as an anti-mustard gas agent.

The company said it AEOL 10150 is among a number of compounds to be studied under the five-year, CounterACT grant for the National Institutes of Health awarded to the National Jewish Medical & Research Center and the University of Colorado Health Sciences, both in Denver.

The compounds will be evaluated for their ability to protect and treat lung and skin injuries associated with mustard gas exposure.

The research will test the theory that administering catalytic antioxidant therapy can protect against mustard gas-induced acute lung and dermal injury.
