BOSTON, March 15 (UPI) -- Sleeping is as important to health as diet and exercise, but some 70 million Americans are not getting enough slumber, a U.S. expert says.

Dr. Lawrence Epstein, recent president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, says his six-step plan to improve sleep deals with sleep issues such as insomnia, disrupted sleep, daytime exhaustion, restlessness, sleepwalking and many other chronic sleep conditions.

His plan, detailed in the "The Harvard Medical School Guide to a Good Night's Sleep," recognizes the need for a good night's sleep, adopting a healthy lifestyle, maintaining good sleep habits, creating the optimal sleep environment and seeking help for persistent sleep problems.

The guide also offers advice on how to silence snoring, help children go to sleep and stay asleep, handle jet lag, cope with shift work and stay awake while driving.
