Throwing eggs at people poses risk

LIVERPOOL, England, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Throwing raw eggs at people as a form of protest or a bit of Halloween fun may result in serious eye injury, warns a British study.

The study, published in the Emergency Medicine Journal, shows that lobbing raw eggs at people can result in serious eye injury.

Researchers at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital monitored more than 18,000 patients requiring eye treatment from November 2004 to December 2005.

Of these, 13 patients had sustained injuries as a result of being assaulted by a raw egg. Twelve of the patients were men, whose average age was 27.

In nine people, the left eye was injured, but only one person had his eyesight unaffected by the incident.

Most of the cases were clustered in October, around Halloween.

"The dimensions of an egg are similar to those of a squash ball, with a considerably greater weight, meaning that eggs as missiles can easily fit into the orbital rim, causing severe blunt injury even when thrown by hand," the authors write.
