Hasek named NHL player of the week

NEW YORK, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Goaltender Dominik Hasek of the NHL-leading Detroit Red Wings was named Monday as NHL Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday.

The five-time Vezina Trophy winner sealed the award Sunday, recording his second straight shutout with 23 saves in a 5-0 victory over Chicago. It was Hasek's 59th career shutout -- the most among active goaltenders.

Hasek also ended San Jose's 10-game unbeaten run with 19 saves in a 3-0 win Friday night. He went 3


0 with a 0.33 goals-against average and .985 save percentage for the week, giving up one goal on 66 shots.

Hasek is 19-8-2 this season and is tied for the league lead in wins with Toronto's Curtis Joseph and Chicago's Jocelyn Thibault. The Red Wings lead the league at 26-8-2-1.

Goaltenders have dominated the Player of the Week awards this season, winning two straight and seven of the last eight. This week's runner-up also was a goalie -- Anaheim's Jean-Sebastien Giguere.
