Google celebrates International Women's Day with 12 doodles

March 7 (UPI) -- Google is celebrating International Women's Day 2018 with 12 interactive doodles that celebrate the extraordinary lives of everyday women from around the world.

Google's homepage features a play button that, when pressed, allows users to select which of the 12 Doodles they would like to explore from artists from around the globe. The doodles work like a storybook with users clicking through pages filled with artwork and descriptions.

My Aunt Blossoms, by Esteli Meza, tells the story of a woman who was stricken with cancer but was able to fight back while Ntsoaki's Victory, by Karabo Poppy, tells the story of a young girl who was able to take part successfully in a men's ritual of lion wrestling.

"Each story represents a moment, person, or event that has impacted their lives as women," Google said of the Doodle project. "While each artist tells a unique story, the themes are universal, reminding us of how much we often have in common. We hope that the combined power of words and images help bring these stories to life in a way that invokes feelings of understanding, empathy, and spirit of the day."

"This project has been an incredible journey for us, and we've been moved by the candor, intimacy, and bravery of our contributors' stories. Translating these works across 80+ languages and sharing them across a global audience means so much to us, and we hope that readers will go about their day feeling as inspired as we do," the company continued.
