RAMALLAH, West Bank, March 18 (UPI) -- Former Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia is urging consideration of a one-state solution with Israel despite "endless problems" it will raise.
A "one-state solution, despite the endless problems it embraces, is one of the solutions that we should be contemplating through an internal dialogue," Qureia, one of the architects of the Oslo Accords, wrote in the London-based al-Quds al-Arabi Saturday.
The two-state solution endorsed by the Palestinian National Council in 1988 has lost its momentum, he wrote, blaming Israel for the situation. Qureia said Israel "decapitated" the peace process through settlement building and "creating new facts" on the ground in Jerusalem and the West Bank.
The Jerusalem Post said Qureia also blamed Arab nations, the United States and the West for failing to aid the Palestinians achieve statehood.
Talks between Israel and the Palestinians to reach a two-state solution have been at a standstill for months.
The Oslo Accords, signed by Israel and the Palestinians in Washington in 1993, was aimed at resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and offered a framework to negotiate a two-state solution.
