Ford to cut output of big SUVs

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 9 (UPI) -- Ford Motor Co. will cut one shift of production next spring at a plant in Wayne, Mich., that makes big sports utility vehicles.

The move, which responds to falling sales, will result in an undetermined number of layoffs of workers who produce the new Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, the Detroit Free Press said Thursday.

"Our business plan shows we can meet the demand with one shift, because the overall volumes are in decline," Ford spokeswoman Anne Marie Gattari said.

Year-to-date sales last month for Expedition were down last month 30 percent and for the Navigator were down 15 percent, Ford said.
