Few Saudi women take part in driving protest

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Organizers of a protest by women drivers in Saudi Arabia said Saturday at least 10 women had defied the kingdom's unofficial ban on women behind the wheel.

The protest was aimed at conservative religious edicts that are often interpreted as prohibiting women from driving, and the Saudi government earlier this week had warned women that existing traffic laws would be strictly enforced, CNN said.

Protest leaders told CNN the number of women who said they had used the family car to run errands or take other trips would probably increase. Some of the drivers Saturday posted video of themselves on social media sites.

Several of the women stated they had not been harassed or bothered by other motorists or the police. A government official said traffic on the highways and streets was typical for a Saturday.
