Jan. 8 (UPI) -- A North Carolina man who came in last in his fantasy football league drew attention for his unusual punishment -- spending 24 hours in a Waffle House.
Justin Poliachik of Wilmington settled into his local Waffle House eatery about 7 p.m. Thursday with a sign on his table explaining his presence.
"I lost fantasy football, so I must stay 24 hours in this Waffle House," the sign stated, with a disclaimer at the bottom saying, "minus 20 minutes for each waffle consumed."
Poliachik ended up eating 7 waffles, earning him enough credit to end his eatery vigil after 21 hours and 40 minutes.
He said the punishment was agreed upon early in the season, well before he was declared the loser.
"We were just spitballing ideas for punishments this year because we needed to do something," Poliachik told WECT-TV. "Someone said it and it just stuck. It made the whole season so much more intense."
He said he knew his season was going poorly early on, when the New York Giants' Odell Beckham Jr. was sidelined with an injury.
"I did not think I was going to lose," Poliachik told WWAY-TV at the start of his punishment. "I'm a little anxious and just want to get this over with. I've been thinking about it for a long time, literally since the beginning of the season. I hope this sitting sucks worse than my fantasy team did."
