June 8 (UPI) -- Apple TV+ is giving a glimpse of the new series Black Bird.

The streaming service shared a trailer for the psychological thriller series Wednesday featuring Taron Egerton.

Black Bird is based on the James Keene and Hillel Levin true crime memoir In With the Devil: A Fallen Hero, A Serial Killer, and a Dangerous Bargain for Redemption and is developed by Mystic River and Shutter Island author Dennis Lehane.

The series, based on actual events, follows Jimmy Keene (Egerton), a high school football hero and policeman's son who is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum security prison. Jimmy is given the choice to enter a maximum-security prison for the criminally insane and befriend suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser), or stay where he is with no possibility of parole.

"Keene quickly realizes his only way out is to elicit a confession and find out where the bodies of several young girls are buried before Hall's appeal goes through. But is this suspected killer telling the truth? Or is it just another tale from a serial liar?" an official description reads.

Greg Kinnear, Sepideh Moafi, and late actor Ray Liotta also star. The series marks Liotta's final role.

Black Bird is developed, written and executive produced by Lehane. Michaël R. Roskam directed the first three episodes and executive produces with Lehane and Egerton.

The series premieres July 8 on Apple TV+.
