Speedman previously appeared in a Season 14 episode where Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) saved his kidney. The Season 18 premiere showed Meredith (Pompeo) visit Minnesota, where she ran into Nick (Speedman).

Meredith is now single and shared her relationship status with Nick, sparking speculation of a romance in the new season.

Entertainment Weekly said Speedman will be a series regular in Season 18.

Deadline confirmed the news alongside an interview with Speedman and showrunner Krista Vernoff. Speedman said "the romantic comedy" aspect of the season reminded him of his show Felicity.

"It kind of reminded me of that, a little bit, and that's a really nice suit to put back on, in a way, you know? So, I was excited about that," he said.

Vernoff said fans will have to wait and see if Nick and Meredith will remain in Minnesota or return to Seattle.

"I think it's not without its obstacles. He works full-time in Minnesota, but we've established he's a traveling surgeon, as well," Vernoff said. "He's got his whole life, and she's got her whole life, and we'll see what happens."

Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays on ABC.

Speedman will also star in Season 3 of the Netflix series You.
