'Picard': Paramount+ renews 'Star Trek' series for Season 3

Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Star Trek: Picard will return for a third season on Paramount+.

The streaming service confirmed Wednesday on Twitter that it renewed the sci-fi series for Season 3.

"The adventure continues. #StarTrekPicard is returning for Season 3 on #ParamountPlus," the post reads.

Star Trek: Picard is created by Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kirsten Beyer and Alex Kurtzman. The show is the eighth Star Trek series and follows a retired Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart).

Paramount+ shared news of the renewal on Star Trek Day, a day celebrating the Star Trek universe. The renewal comes ahead of Picard Season 2, which will premiere in February 2022.

Paramount+ released a trailer for Season 2 that shows Picard (Stewart) and his crew return to the past to save their future. Allison Pill, Isa Briones, Evan Evagora, Michelle Hurd and Santiago Cabrera co-star.

Season 3 is expected to premiere in 2023.

In addition, the Star Trek series Star Trek: Discovery will return for a fourth season Nov. 18 on Paramount+.
