June 1 (UPI) -- Outlander Season 6 is coming in 2022.
Starz said in a press release Tuesday on World Outlander Day that production has wrapped on Season 6 of the historical drama series. The season will premiere in early 2022.
Season 6 will consist of eight episodes and kick off with a 90-minute premiere. Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan will return to star as Claire and Jamie Fraser, with Sophie Skelton and Richard Rankin as Brianna and Roger MacKenzie.
"We are excited to get into the editing room to work on bringing fans one step closer to reuniting with the family back on Fraser's Ridge," showrunner Matthew B. Roberts said in a statement.
"Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible," he added. "Dinna fash, we will then film an extended season seven with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy."
Season 6 will follow Claire (Balfe) and Jamie (Heughan) as they navigate the trials and tribulations of life in colonial America. The couple seek to protect their home at Fraser's Ridge as the revolution approaches and conflict in the community grows.
"Season 6 explores what happens when there is disharmony and division among the inhabitants of the home you've created: when you become an outsider, or an 'outlander,' so to speak, marginalized and rejected in your own home," an official description reads.
Starz president of original programming Christina Davis said Outlander will have an "exciting" sixth season.
"We are committed to telling the story fully with gripping and bold storylines in the upcoming eight-episode season that introduces viewers to new characters including Tom, Allan and Malva Christie (Mark Lewis-Jones, Alexander Vlahos and Jessica Reynolds) who create tension on the Ridge," she said.
Starz shared first-look photos for the season featuring Claire, Jamie, Brianna and Roger.
Outlander is based on the Diana Gabaldon book series. Gabaldon will release Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, the ninth novel in the series, in November.
