Gurira may also play the character in the Wakanda series Ryan Coogler is developing for Disney+. Coogler directed Black Panther and will return to helm Wakanda Forever.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news in 2021 list of Hollywood's most powerful lawyers. The list said Jamie Mandelbaum negotiated a deal for Gurira to reprise Okoye in the Black Panther sequel and a spinoff series at Disney+.

Wakanda Forever will open in theaters in July 2022. The sequel follows Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman's death at age 43 in August.

Gurira first appeared as Okoye in Black Panther and reprised the role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Gurira also portrayed Michonne on the AMC series The Walking Dead.
