Rachel Brosnahan discusses mom-shaming in 'Mrs. Maisel'

By Annie Martin

Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Rachel Brosnahan was surprised by the mom-shaming her character experiences in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

The 29-year-old actress and her co-star Tony Shalhoub appeared on Tuesday's episode of Today, where Brosnahan teased some challenges her character, Miriam "Midge" Maisel, will face in Season 3.

In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Midge (Brosnahan) is a housewife and mother turned stand-up comedian. Brosnahan said she was taken aback by reaction to Midge pursuing a career.

"It's been so surprising," the actress said. "I'm not a mom, so it's not something I've ever experienced personally, but I've found myself being offended on behalf of a fictional character.

"The number of times that I've been asked whether or not I think Midge is a terrible mom... I got asked in an interview whether or not I thought she loved her children," she shared. "I'm getting a little taste of the kind of mom-shaming that goes on in the real world."

Season 3 opens with Midge going on tour, which causes tension with her family. Midge's parents, Abe (Shalhoub) and Rose (Marin Hinkle), only recently learned she is a comic.

"That's caused kind of a ripple effect through the family," Brosnahan said. "It's a little tense between us when we start Season 3."

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 3 premieres Friday on Amazon Prime Video. Amazon released a trailer for the season in October that shows Midge touring the U.S.
