May 14 (UPI) -- Milo Ventimiglia discussed on The Tonight Show his NBC drama This is Us and his role as father Jack Pearson.

Ventimiglia detailed to host Jimmy Fallon on Monday the experience of portraying a younger Jack during the show's recently concluded third season.

"To go backwards and do clean-shaven and war Jack, I had to make sure, and the writers make sure, that everything was still lining up toward that eventual Jack that we knew from the first season and the second season," the actor said.

"So it was challenging, but it was so rewarding," Ventimiglia continued before mentioning his co-star Mandy Moore who portrays Rebecca Pearson.

"What Mandy and I were able to discover in this newer, younger era of that love story was really wonderful," he said.

NBC renewed This is Us for three more seasons on Sunday. Sterling K. Brown, Chrissy Metz and Justin Hartley also star.

Ventimiglia also discussed his love for Morrissey who was the musical guest on The Tonight Show.

"It's one of those things where I kind of feel like he raised me a little bit," he said about listening to Morrissey and his band The Smiths while growing up. "He kind of consumed my life."
